I will soon be entering the wonderful world of autocross, but first I need to purchase a helmet. I need something as cheap as possible (I still need rear tires and most likely need brakes, so I gotta save my cash) that is also of good quality, since I will probably attempt to hold on to it for as long as possible and to use it in as many higher-risk situations that I can. Additionally, I would like a full-face, just because I do. Any good suggestions?

A picture of my car for your troubles (the A'PEXi badge has since been removed).

Go to Jegs or Summit.

If you can't afford a good one, just use the free loaner helmets (every autocross offers them) until you can spend 250 or so for an OMP or Bell full face

Are they gross? I'd probably be slightly concerned about lice/old sweat/diseases.

Yeah, they're generally sweaty. I used them once then promptly spent 250 on an OMP full face. Sure, you can find cheaper helmets (Zamp open face, etc.) but IMO a helmet is not something to cheap out on.

30 year street motorcyclist here. What you are looking for is a helmet with a Snell rating. This certifies that it is safe for competition use. Because the testing is quite rigorous, generally speaking any helmet that passes is of high enough quality that you will be happy, and it should last for years. I happen to like Shoei, because for me they have been quite comfortable and durable, but many other brands are also good. Don't skimp on your helmet. As a few of my friends have learned the hard way doctors are good at patching up broken legs and lacerated livers. Scrambled brain - not so much. Good luck and have fun racing.
